My 11 month old son takes liquid medicine every day (5 syringes per day). Since he's been taking liquid medicine every day starting at a very young age (well before we started RIE classes), this is something my husband and I have really struggled with (how to give the medicine with respect, how to keep the medicine from being confused with "food" -- something you should have a choice about, etc.). Even when he was very young, we showed our son the medicine bottle and syringe, told him what they were and why we were giving him the medicine, told him what we were doing (putting the syringe in his mouth, squirting the medicine), and we'd only squirt a tiny bit in and wait until he swallowed that amount, etc., before continuing with his cooperation. Sometimes it took a very, very long time. Now, at 11 months, he helps shake the bottle (I don't know what RIE would think about that) and helps put the bottle back in the fridge. One important thing: I have the medicine compounded so that the dose is smaller and less overwhelming. If RIE has any suggestions, I, too, would love to know what they are.
