About the Authors
Under the tutelage of Dr. Emmi Pikler, Magda began her work with children at a Hungarian orphanage, commonly known as "Loczy," during World War II. Loczy, still in operation today, has become a worldwide model for quality infant care and still uses the same principles on which Magda's RIE philosophy is based. Magda's family emigrated to the United States and she continued her work with children at Children's Hospital and the Dubnoff School. In 1978 she co-founded Resources for Infant Educarers with Tom Forrest, M.D., a professor of pediatrics at Stanford University. Magda has also taught early childhood development at the University of California, Los Angeles, California State University, Northridge and at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena where she remains on staff. At her RIE center, Magda teaches parent/infant guidance classes and conducts training seminars for professionals such as teachers and child care providers. Allison Johnson focused on her writing career after deciding to become a stay-at-home mother. She has published essays on parenting in the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Woman. The Way Home, a story of love and family, set in Palm Springs, California (published by Five Star), is Ms. Johnson's first novel. The Way Home has been called a "beguiling blend of family politics, Western landscape and the complications of the human heart." (Jo-Ann Mapson, author of Bad Girl Creek).
